S.C.Cowlersley - Our History
SC Cowlersley was first registered with the Huddersfield & District football league for the season 2002/03.
The club had formerly been the Linthwaite Junior U.18 football team in season 2001/02 (the majority of them having played from the age of U.11 together).
Rather than disperse to numerous clubs within the H&D league the players chose to stay together when entering open age football.
As a Linthwaite club already existed in the league the team opted for a name change and as the majority of the lads lived in Cowlersley then the Club was formed with the addition of the preface Sporting Club.
With little funding and second hand equipment (the players buying their own strip) the club was born.
As the league excitedly pointed out at its AGM this was the first time in a number of years that a junior team had moved into open age football (a feat more recently achieved by both Space and Westend and both of whom have enjoyed success in the league – the former unfortunately are no longer in existence).
In the first season the club finished mid table of the then Division 5 and again the following season by which time the club had recruited a number of new players.
The 2004/05 season looked highly promising with the team having recruited some players capable of taking the team forward and in which they recorded a record score of 26-0 against a hapless Ireti Athletic.
Unfortunately only a quarter ways through the season a number of players left to play at a higher level with other clubs which left the team with a player shortage.
Under new management and the recruitment of more new faces the team were able to see out the season and again finish mid table.
Season 2005/06 saw the team enter the Huddersfield & District Works league after missing the deadline for entry to the H&D football league.
This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the club completed a league and cup double in its first and only season there.
2006/07 saw them back in the H&D football league which now had 4 divisions for first team football.
The club continued its success by winning the Division 4 title and were promoted to Division 3 for season 2007/08 where they find themselves with another change of manager.
While the team/squad has changed considerably over the years the pleasing thing is that the nucleus of the original team still survives.
